License Disc Renewals

South African traffic law requires that you can get fined on the spot if you are driving with an expired motor vehicle license. In SA, licenses discs are renewed once a year, and twice for buses and other passenger vehicles.

As a driver, you are only given a 21 days grace period if your license disc is expired, and you are on the road. To avoid penalties it is advisable to go to your nearest traffic department or post office and submit the relevant motor vehicle license renewal documents. These will differ according to the different scenarios such as renewing a heavy load car disc, a corporate car a public service vehicle.

To simplify the process, we have digitized the process for you. This requires you to digitally fill in forms, upload the necessary documents, and wait for the notification to collect your car license disc.

New Vehicle Registrations

Every car needs to have a registration certificate. To do this, the driver needs to register the car at the traffic department even if it’s a new, pre-owned, built, or re-built motor vehicle.

Only when the car is registered and licensed you will be able to get a license disc, allowing you to drive on public roads.

To register a new vehicle, you need to go to your nearest traffic department with your ID, proof of residence, the manufacturer’s certificate, and a completed Complete the Application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle (RLV) form.

The RLV form can be downloaded online, or the process can be completed online through UCS.

Our digital system allows you to apply for vehicle registration from the comfort of your own home without the need for long queues and admin.

Change of Vehicle Ownership

When you purchase a new car, it has to be registered with the traffic department. Also, when a used car is handed over to a new driver, they have the responsibility of ensuring that the car ownership is changed.

The vehicle registration and change of ownership process are different if the car is being registered under an individual name versus a company. You can only get your motor vehicle license disc when the car has been registered and licensed.

Should you get into a car accident or need to renew a car’s license disc, not acquiring the right ownership to the car will be a challenge. You cannot insure a car that is not in your name because you have no insurable interest in it. In order for a change of ownership to be registered, the driver must go to their relevant motor vehicle registration authority or licensing department.

This requires possible hours of queuing, filling out forms, and ensuring that you have the right supporting documentation. Through our digitized system, you only need to deal with a small portion of the long process, and we will do the rest for you.

Learner’s | Driver’s license | PDP bookings

Booking for a learner’s or driver’s license is a challenge for South African new drivers. Reported low service levels at license testing centers, and inadequate parking and seating facilities make this a big challenge. The lack of availability of booking slots on the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) is the biggest pain point for prospective drivers.

After weeks and days of studying for a learner’s test and money spent on driving lessons, the last thing one should be dealing with is no available days to take the test.

Only Gauteng residents are able to book dates on NaTIS, although there are never any slots available.

UCS can help you secure a date with a testing station near you through our well-established network.

Booking for a learner’s license at a driving licensing testing center (DLTC) requires your identity document, two photographs, proof of address, and a booking fee. An issuing fee is only required when you pass your test. You will also need to fill out the Application for a learner’s license form (LL1).

Booking for a driver’s license requires all the above including your learner’s license and two additional photographs.

Vehicle Deregistrations

In cases where a car has been stolen, declared unworthy to be on the public road, or permanently demolished, it has to be registered on the NaTIS system. If a car’s license disc is not renewed for 4 years, it will automatically be deregistered.

To deregister a vehicle, you will need the following documents:

  • Application for deregistration of vehicle (ADV) form
  • Certified copy of your identity document
  • The vehicle’s registration certificate
  • Certified copy of proof of ownership of the motor vehicle (title holder)

Unfortunately, this process cannot be done online and all these forms should be submitted at your nearest registering authority.

UCS offers a digital platform to fill out the relevant application forms and submit the supporting documents required and we will handle the rest for you.
